Inclusion Criteria: What Gets You In the Door
Inclusion criteria describe the baseline profile a participant needs to have. This usually starts with a confirmed diagnosis matching the study’s focus, but it often goes further, specifying disease stage, particular biomarkers, age brackets, or even how long it’s been since a previous treatment. Some studies also require a certain level of general health, since participants need to be able to safely handle the study procedures and follow-up visits.
These requirements exist to make sure the people enrolled genuinely reflect the population the treatment is intended for. A trial testing a treatment for early-stage disease isn’t useful if it’s filled with participants whose condition has already advanced well past that point.
Exclusion Criteria: The Less Obvious Half
Exclusion criteria tend to surprise people more than inclusion criteria, because they can rule someone out for reasons that feel unrelated to their main condition. Common examples include other health conditions that could interfere with the study treatment, current use of certain medications, pregnancy, or participation in another trial at the same time. This step protects both the participant and the integrity of the study, since it catches details that a self-reported questionnaire might miss.
